 Through the Worker's Eyes: Developing Learning Activities with Work-Related Documents

This guide is part of a trainer’s kit developed and distributed by QUILL Learning Network. Trained facilitators have committed to use this guide when delivering the workshop “Through the Workers Eyes: Developing Learning Activities with Work-Related Documents”. They will deliver the workshop in literacy network regions across Ontario in an effort to:

• help build the capacity of workforce and workplace literacy instructors
• provide instructors with training, tools, and strategies for using authentic documents and developing learning activities

 Enhancing Pathways Report Phase 1

This project brought together the agencies that provide language and literacy programming within the regions of Project READ Literacy Network and Peel Halton Dufferin Adult Learning Network in Ontario. The goal was to enhance communication and referrals among the agencies.

 Partnership Success Stories: Literacy and Basic Skills Agencies and Ontario Works

Partnership Success Stories shares eight success stories on effective partnerships between Literacy and Basic Skills agencies and Ontario Works in diverse communities around Ontario. The goal of these stories is to increase knowledge and understanding of the many creative ways in which LBS agencies across the province are working with Ontario Works to provide support to adult learners to meet their goals.

Each of the success stories provides and overview of:

• the partnership initiative
• the reasons the partnership took place
• the partners involved
• the factors that made the partnership successful
• the impact of each initiative

 Succession Planning for LBS Agencies and Networks

A collection of tools and resources to develop a succession plan.

 Gamification (various resources)

Gamification, a technique based in part on introducing game play elements to non-game settings, is becoming a key technique used to engage learners in their education. Through Literacy Link South Central’s recent Job Creation Partnership project, a study of the history, impact and execution of gamification principles in adult education was completed, and we’re pleased to share several resources with you as a result. Resources include:

• Gamification and Adult Literacy – a full report outlining the use of gamification across multiple platforms, including adult education
• Gamification Essentials for Educators – a tip sheet that summarizes the key learnings of this report for adult literacy practitioners
• Using Gamification Techniques to Increase Learner Comfort with Typing – a sample exercise for adult literacy learners that includes several elements of gamification 

In 2017, the report "Using Gamification in LBS and Beyond", along with the French language translation of the report's executive summary, was released. These are also included in the download below.

 Formalizing Transitions between Employment Services and LBS

For several years, Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) and Employment Services (ES) programs have been working together in communities across Ontario. Because there has been no official direction on how to specifically work together, communities have taken an organic approach – doing “what they can with what they have” in order to try to serve clients more effectively. Now that both Employment Services and LBS services are using EOIS-CaMS, there is an opportunity to assess the results of these collaborative efforts to set community goals.

The purpose of this project was to research the ways in which ES and LBS programs have been working together to promote transitions from ES to LBS and from LBS to ES. As part of this research, the project:

• documented and shared current and emerging best practices regarding transitions between ES and LBS, as well as examples of screening tools and introductory/awareness raising workshops that are in use
• informally piloted some of these best practices in Simcoe/Muskoka
• examined how EOIS-CaMS data and reports can be used to track, compare and project results within the Performance Management Framework
• investigated how the transitions can be effectively documented and integrated into the current Literacy Service Planning processes and products
