Activities to Explore Skilled Trades

“Activities to Explore the Skilled Trades” is a compilation of six task-based activities for learners on the

apprenticeship goal path that were originally housed on QUILL’s Task Based Activities for LBS portal.

The tasks included:

1. Read and comprehend the article “Trades Overview”

2. Interpret a Sectors and Trades Chart

3. Trade Exploration

4. Watch a short video to learn the truth about the myths of apprenticeship

5. Find websites related to apprenticeship

6. Find information about apprenticeship, apprenticeship grants and the Red Seal Program

(updated with the new name “Find information about Financial Support for Apprentices”)

Apprenticeship in Manufacturing

Apprenticeship in Manufacturing was originally one in a series of five modules created by

LLSC to support job seekers interested in a career in manufacturing. In addition to

Apprenticeship in Manufacturing, other modules in the series include:

• Essential Skills for Manufacturing

• Manufacturing Job Postings

• Dinner Is Served: An Introduction to Food Processing

Getting Ready for a Career as an Automotive Service Technician

“Getting Ready for a Career as an Automotive Service Technician” is a compilation of new curriculum related to this specific skilled trade along with several task-based activities for learners on the apprenticeship goal path that were originally housed on QUILL’s Task Based Activities for LBS portal.

As part of Community Literacy of Ontario’s Skills for Success initiative, these task-based activities were updated and revised to reflect current automotive standards and processes, and the apprenticeship system in Ontario as of February 2023. The tasks included:

•Automotive Codes for Troubleshooting

•Automotive Service Repair Invoice

Skills for Success in the Service Sector

“Skills for Success in the Service Sector” is an original resource created for Community Literacy of Ontario as part

of the provincial Skills for Success initiative. It focuses on the use of ApprenticeSearch.com, teaching prospective

apprentices how to use the website, while cross-referencing jobs in the Service sector with the Skills for Success.

Training and Working in Skilled Trades

“Training and Working in the Skilled Trades” is an original resource created for Community Literacy of Ontario as part of the provincial Skills for Success initiative. 

This resource:

• provides a general overview of apprenticeship and the skilled trades.
• outlines each of the Skills for Success and how apprentices use them.
• instructs learners on how to use the Skilled Trades Ontario website.
• provides an opportunity for learners to practice using the Skilled Trades Ontario website while finding information about specific trades and considering how the Skills for Success are being used in each

Working in a Professional Kitchen

“Working in a Professional Kitchen” is a compilation of new curriculum related to the culinary

trades along with several task-based activities for learners on the apprenticeship goal path that

were originally housed on QUILL’s Task Based Activities for LBS portal.

As part of Community Literacy of Ontario’s Skills for Success initiative, several task-based

activities were updated to reflect the apprenticeship system in Ontario as of February 2023.

The tasks that were either updated or partially used in this resource included:

• Investigate a Trade in Foods

• Complete a self-assessment to help determine a career exploration choice

• Soup recipe for a restaurant

• Explore the Cooking Trade

• Cook Purchase Order

Four Sectors of Apprenticeship eLearning Module

This online course explains apprenticeships, including reasons why to become an apprentice. 

When you have finished this course, the learner will understand the following important topics: 

• The Skilled Trades in Ontario 
• The 4 sectors of apprenticeships 
• Compulsory and voluntary trades 
• Red Seal endorsements 
• If your skills and interests match a career in trades 
• Apprenticeship vocabulary
