Adapting to Change

This resource provides an overview of adapting to change and strategies for dealing with change. The

Adapting to Change resource is designed for learners with Level 1 skills in Ontario’s Literacy and Basic Skills

Program. It has links to both the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework and the Skills for Success

Framework.

The resource also introduces some of the Skills from the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills’ (OLES) Skills

for Success model. The Skills for Success model was introduced in May 2021 by the Government of Canada

as an update to its well-known model of Essential Skills. While there are 9 Skills for Success, for the purpose

of this resource, CLO has focussed on the Adaptability, Collaboration and Problem Solving

Building Your Skills Through Volunteering

This resource shares how you can build your skills through volunteering and provides a problem-solving approach to obtaining volunteer experience. Building Your Skills Through Volunteering has been developed to support adult learners with Level 1 skills as they work towards their individual goals of work, further education and training, apprenticeship or independence. It has links to both the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework and the Skills for Success model.

Building Your Self Confidence

This resource explores ways to change your mindset or behaviors to build your self-confidence. Increased self-confidence can help you move forward in positive ways at home, school, work, in your community or social settings. Improved self-confidence can have positive effects on your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Building Your Self Confidence has been developed to support adult learners with Level 1 skills as they work towards their individual goals of work, further education and training, apprenticeship, or independence. It has links to both the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework and the Skills for Success model.

Finding Services in Your Community

As a result of the multiple challenges faced by underrepresented adults in Literacy and Basic Skills programs,

there is often an increased need for supports and services. Finding these supports can also be a challenge. CLO’s

Finding Services in Your Community provides tips about finding in-person and online services for learners based

on their unique set of barriers and challenges. Using a problem-solving model can help to identify the need and

the appropriate service(s).

This resource has been developed to support adult learners with Level 1 skills as they work towards their

Exploring Your Hobbies, Interests & Skills

This resource encourages a closer look at how hobbies and interests often involve skills that can be

optimized and used in other ways. The Exploring Your Hobbies, Interests, and Skills resource is designed for

Level 1 learners in Ontario’s Literacy and Basic Skills program. It has links to both the Ontario Adult Literacy

Curriculum Framework and the Skills for Success model. A supporting activity which has been articulated to

the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework and which outlines the incorporated Skills for Success is

included at the end of the resource.

Setting Your Priorities

Adults in Literacy and Basic Skills programs have competing priorities based on their individual circumstances.

The need to prioritize situations at home, work and socially can be difficult. Understanding how to set priorities

is an important skill in the busy lives of adults. CLO’s Setting Your Priorities resource explains why priorities are

important and how problem-solving skills can support you as you set priorities.

Getting Involved in Your Community

This resource provides an overview of how you can engage with your community and strategies to

make it happen. The Getting Involved in your Community resource is designed for Level 1 learners in

Ontario’s Literacy and Basic Skills program. It has links to both the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum

Framework and the Skills for Success model. A supporting activity which has been articulated to the

Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework and which outlines the incorporated Skills for Success is

included at the end of the resource.

Promoting Inclusion - Introduction to Self-Advocacy

This course talks about speaking up for underrepresented groups. It includes self-assessment, steps to self-advocacy and ways to approach this process.
