Google’s Lookout app for Android is an AI-powered accessibility tool designed to assist users with low or no vision navigate their surroundings more independently. It uses built-in computer vision and generative AI to identify and describe objects, text, and scenes captured by the phone’s camera in real time and offers multiple functional modes:

·       Text mode reads printed or handwritten text aloud while sorting mail or reading signage

·       Documents mode captures and speaks full pages of text in over 30 languages

·       Explore mode identifies objects, people, and text in the environment

·       Currency, Food labels, and Find modes help users recognize banknotes, packaged goods, and locate objects with direction/distance indicators

Based on webinars conducted in October 2023 and February 2024, this report explores how generative AI can support Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in LBS. Key insights from the report include:

·       How AI tools such as ChatGPT and other large language models can generate multiple modes of representation (e.g., text simplification, imagery), engagement, and expression aligned with UDL principles for assessments and instruction

·       Practical recommendations and tips for implementing AI and UDL in literacy programming, including prompt design, fact-checking, and inclusive assessment strategies informed by educator feedback

·       Emphasis on the importance of co-design and ethical use, engaging both learners and educators in AI tool selection and design, while upholding privacy and inclusivity
