Community Literacy of Ontario (CLO) is pleased to share our St. John Ambulance for iPhone and Android resource, part of the Digital Tools for Apprenticeship & Workplace series.

This series of Skills for Success Curriculum Resources is a beginner’s guide to the certain handy digital tools for use in the workplace or on apprenticeships. The goal is to provide basics tools to employed learners, or learners seeking employment, so that they can thrive as employees.

The series is divided into six sections that can be used separately or in tandem:

Safely Applying for Jobs Online will help adult learners enrolled in Ontario’s Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program who are interested in learning how to identify job posting scams and stay safe while applying for jobs online.

Topics covered are:

• Fake job listings

• Fake cheque scams

• Phishing emails

• Data entry scams

• Online reshipping scams

This resource has been designed for learners with Level 2 skills.

Exploring Employment as a Painter

Exploring Employment as a Painter will help adult learners enrolled in Ontario’s Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program who are interested in learning more about working in this type of job.

Exploring Employment as a Painter provides an overview of both the hard and soft skills needed to work as a commercial and residential painter. It highlights working conditions, ways to get training, and planning the next steps. Learners can also do a brief self-assessment on whether they think the job of painter is a good fit for them.

This resource embeds the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success model. Tasks and the Supporting Activity align with the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework.

This resource has been designed for learners with Level 2 skills.

Exploring Employment as an Assistant Cook will help adult learners enrolled in Ontario’s Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program who are interested in learning more about working in this type of job.

Exploring Employment as an Assistant Cook provides an overview of both the hard and soft skills needed to work as an assistant cook. It highlights working conditions, ways to get training, and planning the next steps. This resource embeds the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success model. Financial Management for the Newly Employed

This series of Skills for Success Curriculum Resources is a beginner’s guide to financial management for LBS learners who have recently entered the workforce. The goal is to provide newly-employed learners with resources to aid with effective money-management, budgetary planning, and savings. This series will also provide support for learners navigating certain online financial platforms, like online banking and the Canada Revenue Agency website.

These resources are learner-based and activity-focused, with each topic area serving as a mini-lesson, followed by personalized activities. The activities are optional, but they will help embed the key points of the lessons, by inviting learners to respond to lesson material or explore the given online platforms.

Practitioners may be required to assist learners by reading the activities.

The series is divided into five sections that can be used separately or in tandem:

1. Financial Management for the Newly Employed – Budgeting 

2. Financial Management for the Newly Employed – Opening a Savings Account 

3. Financial Management for the Newly Employed – Using the CRA Website 

4. Financial Management for the Newly Employed – Credit Cards

This series of Skills for Success Curriculum Resources is a beginner’s guide to the modern workplace for LBS learners. The goal is to provide essential tools to employed learners, or learners seeking employment, so that they can thrive as employees. This series considers personal development topics ranging from conflict resolution to time management; topics focused on changes in the workplace; and mental health issues like stress management.

The overall focus of the series is on helping employees (or aspiring employees) understand their rights and responsibilities.

These resources are learner-based and activity-focused, with each topic area serving as a mini-lesson, followed by personalized activities. The activities invite learners to respond to lesson material or explore their own ideas on the subject.

Workplace Literacy Program Delivery

Laubach Literacy Ontario (LLO) is pleased to offer you this module on Workplace Literacy Training. Workplace literacy has a higher profile now in Ontario than perhaps ever before. Ontario is experiencing a constricted labour market which means that there are more jobs available than there are people to fill them. As a result, employers are hiring some individuals who have less than the desired level of skill and so are interested in potentially working with adult literacy agencies to address skills gaps.

Also, the nature of skills needed to perform effectively in the workplace has changed and continues to evolve. Continuous learning is becoming an expectation of, and an asset for, employers and job seekers alike. As a result, adult literacy agencies are increasingly being drawn into the world of providing workplace literacy. This reality represents a change for many adult literacy agencies that, historically, have welcomed all individuals who came to them to seek service. Workplace literacy though often means that adult literacy agencies seek out partnerships with employers who see upgrading needs among their employees.
