Child Development Practitioner Apprenticeship

Author(s): CESBA
Published: 2023
Funder(s): MLITSD

Annotation:

These resources are for learners looking at completing an apprenticeship as a Child Development Practitioner.

The Child Development Practitioner Apprenticeship (CDP) Program is designed for individuals that are working in a childcare setting or looking for an apprenticeship sponsor. Being a CDP apprentice allows you to study on a part-time basis while continuing to work in the childcare field. The Child Development Practitioner Apprenticeship is a voluntary trade that provides an alternate pathway choice to the traditional college pathway for Early Childhood Educators. Apprentices that complete their apprenticeship training and receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development can choose to continue with formal college studies to receive their Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma at a community college.

Creating Apprenticeship Friendly LBS Services - Preparing a Learner for Apprenticeship (Module 2)

Author(s): Laubach Literacy Ontario
Published: 2023
Funder(s): MLITSD

Annotation:

Laubach Literacy Ontario (LLO) has developed a series of resources to support LBS agencies in increasing their capacity to support apprenticeship – with the goal of creating apprenticeship-friendly LBS services. There are four modules:

This module provides an overview of Ontario’s apprenticeship system and its relevance to adult learners in Get SET programming. It explains how apprenticeship fits within the Employment Ontario system, including eligibility requirements, entry pathways, and the role of Pre-Apprenticeship programs. It highlights how criteria such as education, language proficiency, essential skills, and workplace readiness influence learners’ decisions to enter or remain in Get SET. The resource also outlines supports for foreign credential recognition to help practitioners guide internationally trained adults appropriately.

The module includes practical guidance for Get SET agencies, such as selecting assessment tools to determine apprenticeship readiness, aligning assessment practices, and integrating apprenticeship-focused language into individualized training plans. It encourages practitioners to review curriculum materials, programming, partnerships, and staff expertise to ensure alignment with trade expectations and workplace contexts.

Finally, the module emphasizes collaboration and continuous improvement. It identifies key partners—including training delivery agents, unions, employers, community agencies, and credential recognition bodies—and explores how Skills for Success competencies connect to trade readiness. It concludes with guidance on targeted professional development to strengthen agency capacity to support learners pursuing skilled trades pathways.

Creating Apprenticeship-Friendly LBS Services - LBS and Apprentice Support (Module 3)

This module provides an overview of how Get SET agencies can support adult learners who have transitioned into apprenticeship pathways and need continued development of foundational skills to succeed in in-school training. Grounded in the Get SET Apprenticeship goal path, it highlights apprenticeship as a strong pathway for learners and emphasizes how reading, document use, numeracy, and digital skills impact success in technical training. The module positions Get SET programming as a bridge between workplace experience and trade certification, supporting persistence, completion, and long-term employment outcomes.

Using a structured planning approach, the module helps agencies identify and address skills gaps, select appropriate assessment tools, and review curriculum to ensure alignment with apprenticeship demands, including the use of authentic trade-related materials. It also prompts reflection on staff professional development needs to strengthen practitioner capacity to support registered apprentices.

The module encourages agencies to understand their local apprenticeship landscape, map training and sector opportunities, and incorporate authentic documents into instruction. It highlights wraparound supports—such as tutoring, time management, financial literacy, digital skills, and referral partnerships—that contribute to apprentice success. Overall, the resource provides practical strategies and capacity-building tools to strengthen outcomes for learners on the apprenticeship pathway.
