Communications Support: Context Clues

This module is the second of seven in the “Communications Support” series. It explains how students can improve their reading comprehension by expanding their vocabulary (which also helps to improve writing skills).

Communications Support: Skimming and Scanning

This module is the third of seven in the “Communications Support” series. It explains how students can use “quick look strategies” – skimming and scanning – to get the most out of their readings for work and for academic learning. They will learn some time-saving methods to read effectively without always needing a lot of time to do so.

Communications Support: Fact Versus Opinion

This module is the fourth of seven in the “Communications Support” series. It explains the importance of distinguishing fact from opinion in both academic and everyday sources. This is an important critical thinking skill for learners (especially in our current world of “fake news”) because it allows them to evaluate and form their own opinions about various topics.

Communications Support: Active Reading SQ3R

This module is the fifth of seven in the “Communications Support” series. It explains and illustrates the SQ3R active reading strategy: “Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review”. Unlike skimming and scanning (see Module 3), the SQ3R reading strategy helps readers to absorb and comprehend written information. Learners will be able to practice SQ3R by applying it to readings in this module.

Communications Support: Mind Mapping

This module is the sixth of seven in the “Communications Support” series. It explains another strategy for active reading known as “mind mapping”. A mind map helps readers to visually connect ideas and concepts, especially when reading more complicated text. Learners will be able to practice mind-mapping by applying it to readings in this module.

Communications Support: Text Structure

This module is the last of seven in the “Communications Support” series. It explains how to use the structure (organization) of the text to help make sense of the material. This strategy applies to expository texts (nonfiction or informational e.g. from a history book or science journal). Learners will be able to practice using text structure to improve their reading comprehension by analyzing the organization and structure of various readings in this module.

Newcomer ASL and Communications for Independence (Employment)

In this course, learners will learn tips about the employment world. The central aim of the course is to support Deaf learners’, and in particular newcomers’, independence and comfort navigating employment services and strategies, including how to look for and apply for a job, and to strengthen their communication skills in ASL.

This resource will act as an introduction to the course: course overview, learning objectives, and the navigation of content, videos, and resources.

Curriculum Resource #2: Building a Resumé

This resource will introduce learners to what a resumé is, its purpose, and how you can build one – even if you don’t have any work experience! The resource will introduce vocabulary to do with resumé building and useful skills.

Curriculum Resource #3: Looking for a Job

This resource will support learners in how to look for a job, including how to access and navigate online job sites and resources. This resource will introduce vocabulary and basic skills for how to communicate with prospective employers.
