 English Proficiency Assessment

The Literacy Link Eastern Ontario (LLEO) English Proficiency Assessment is designed to determine the assessment level for learners entering Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) classes. The assessment is structured into two levels, with the second section only administered if a learner successfully completes the first. Please note: This assessment was designed to accompany the LLEO English for Work books and group activity guides. However, this assessment could apply to any English proficiency learner joining am LBS class in Ontario to determine an assessment level for reporting.

Assessment Guidelines

• Instructor Role: Instructors may explain directions to help learners understand questions but should avoid providing the correct answers.
• Assistance: Learners may use devices for translation exercises and personal identification to complete document-use tasks.
• Spelling: Accurate spelling is not required for Level 1, provided the instructor can understand the intended words.
