Newcomers to Ontario – Learning about Housing Using Settlement.org embeds the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success model. A social connection can take place anywhere: in a physical place where people connect face-to-face or via a virtual space such as social media or a private online forum. It can involve family, a neighbour, or strangers. It can be with one other or a few other people as well as larger groups. It can involve social or work situations.

This resource will consider positive aspects of social connections, including:

  • why a learner should engage socially

  • social anxiety and other sources of social isolation

  • finding interests

  • skills for successful engagement, etc.

It will also discuss adapting and making changes to improve social connections. It will then explore some problem solving to combat roadblocks to connecting socially.

This curriculum is intended to be an overview of the earnings exemptions allowed while collecting social assistance. It does not have all allowable exemptions or deductions. There are many different questions that learners may have, and we suggest that you direct them to their caseworkers for individual situations.

Our intent is to help learners:

  • understand the difference between gross pay and net pay

  • know how to read a pay stub

  • know how to calculate their earnings exemptions

  • know how to enter the information into the forms for OW and OSDP

The resource is laid out so that learners have an idea of all of the implications of disclosing a disability at their place of employment or prior to being hired. Learners need to understand that it’s not a one-way street. Both the employee and employer share responsibility when working to accommodate a disability. Once the learner has worked through the material, they will have a better understanding about whether it is in their best interest to disclose their disability. In some cases, they will have to disclose if an accommodation is required for the performance of their job.

This is not intended to be definitive in the realm of Social-Emotional Skills but rather a document that helps learners understand the many ways Social-Emotional Skills are defined and what they actually mean. In the world of work today, many employers are starting to use these skills when determining who they hire and within their organization to help current employees.

The learner will gain the knowledge that these skills are things they may already use effectively. However, if the skills are new to the learner, they will learn how to use them in a safe environment.
