Published: 2023
Funder(s): MLITSD

Annotation:

This targeted training package includes all the materials you need to run a workshop series for family literacy.

The package includes:

  • Power Points
  • Learner Plan Template
  • Learner Assessment
  • Learner Workbook
  • Handouts and Activities

The training has been developed to be delivered over 10-14 sessions. Each session will take 2-3 hours.  Each session has a PowerPoint presentation. There is one learner workbook, which is used for all 10-14 sessions. The workbook can be printed, or distributed online as a fillable PDF. There is an answer key that applies to some sessions. In addition, there is a sample learner plan template with suggested milestones that can be used by Employment Ontario funded programs.

The training has been designed to include children. It is recommended that multiple staff members facilitate this learning series as a team as you will need additional supports to engage with the children. Some of the content is directed specifically at parents. Therefore, the children will need to be supported while participating in their own activity. You have the option of facilitating some sessions for parents only and only inviting the children to select sessions that can involve them completely. All materials can be adapted. Therefore, you can facilitate this learning series using any format that works best for your program.

Teachings of the Seven Sacred/Seven Grandfathers

Author(s): Ontario Native Literacy Coalition
Published: 2023
Funder(s): MLITSD

Annotation:

The traditional concepts of respect and sharing that form the foundation of the Indigenous way of all life are built around the seven natural laws, or sacred teachings. Each teaching honours one of the basic virtues that are necessary for a full and healthy life. Each law is embodied by an animal to underscore the point that all actions and decisions made by man are manifest on a physical plane. The animal world taught man how to live close to the earth, and the connection that has been established between the animal world, the environment and that of man has instilled a respect for all life in those who follow the traditional Indigenous way.

Thirteen Moons Curriculum

Author(s): Ontario Native Literacy Coalition
Published: 2023
Funder(s): MLITSD

Annotation:

This facilitator’s guide is a tool to help the facilitator construct lessons around the thirteen moons of the Anishinaabe, Cree, and Kaniakeha’:ka (Mohawk) of the Haudenosaunee cultures. Within this guide are all the tools for each of the First Nations represented and the sample lessons can be adapted to each nation.

The Haudenosaunee consists of Six Nations - Mohawk, Cayuga, Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, and Tuscarora. All six nations follow the same Haudenosaunee cultural values when it comes to the ceremonies according to the celestial calendar. Each of the six nations have their own language and diuretics regarding writing and this guide focuses on the Mohawk Nation.

This guide includes the days of the week, thirteen moons, numbers one to thirty-one, and the seasons representative to each culture in both English and each nation’s language. Dialects may vary from nation to nation and community to community.

Teachings of the Medicine Wheel

Author(s): Ontario Native Literacy Coalition
Published: 2023
Funder(s): MLITSD

Annotation:

The Medicine Wheel is a circular symbol representing the wholeness of traditional Indigenous life. It is a perfectly balanced shape without a top or bottom, length, or width. It represents constant movement and change. It also represents and symbolizes unity, peace, harmony, and courage. It is a testimony of the human being’s ability to survive and to maintain balance. The goal is to strike a harmonious balance in life. The circular form of the Medicine Wheel shows the relationship of all things in a unity, a perfect form, and suggests the cyclical nature of all relationships and interactions. Everything in the universe is part of a single whole.
