The Logistics and Distribution Curriculum was conceived to provide adult literacy instructors and learners an introduction to employment in the fast-growing logistics and warehouse sector. According to the Durham Region Retail Trade Industry Summary 2018 Report, “(i)n Canada, (the) retail trade industry employs 2.1 million people, with 11 percent of the total employed labour force working in this sector.” For many communities, the retail trade and hospitality sectors are where the majority of our members find employment. In developing this health and safety curriculum, Decoda took content from the BCFED Health & Safety Centre’s Developing Communication and Health and Safety Skills Using English as a Second Language program and viewed it through a literacy lens. The goal in doing this was to provide program facilitators with materials that would allow them to help learners develop their literacy skills using health and safety content. This resource has reading, writing and oral communication activities embedded in the health and safety content. The curriculum includes a facilitator guide as well as a student workbook.

The curriculum is written at LBS Level 3 (old validation draft level) but can be adapted based on the needs of the learners. The resource provides a helpful step-by-step curriculum, and tips and notes for practitioners are included for each lesson, along with the answer key for the learning activities.
This Labour Market Partnership project focused on individuals who have less than a grade 12 level of functional ability and who struggle to find jobs with their skill levels in the Western Region of Ontario. In Ontario, there are many programs that have been designed to address the needs of this target group. However, Literacy Link South Central saw a need for community coordination in order to effectively use this range of community programs to achieve an effective outcome for lower-skilled Ontarians – namely, employment.
Ten different strategies were piloted as part of this project, focused on how the Regional Networks can further coordinate local services to enhance employment outcomes for lower-skilled Ontarians. The strategies are shared and analyzed in this helpful report.
